At the beginning of the 21st century, when China joined the WTO, there was a bright expectation that free trade and investment under the common rules would make great strides to enhance peace and prosperity, transcending differences in political systems and stages of economic development. However, global circumstances have taken a completely different turn.
The two major powers, the United States and China, now stand in opposition under the banners of “Make America Great Again” and “The Great Rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation,” while wars in Ukraine and the Middle East have plunged democracy and respect for human rights into a state of crisis. We must acknowledge that we have entered an era of uncertainty and chaos.
Center for International Economic Collaboration (CFIEC) conducts research, provides information, and carries out other activities with the aim of addressing issues facing the Japanese economy and promoting economic cooperation with other countries and regions around the world.
Specifically, CFIEC has been advancing research on topics such as strategies for new trade rules, economic security, the future prospects of China, India and other countries and their relations with Japan, and the future of digital society—all in close collaboration with experts from various sectors and policymakers.
In this increasingly chaotic global environment, we will do our utmost to support the analysis and decision-making of business leaders, government officials, academics, and other professionals across various sectors. We sincerely ask for your continued understanding and support of the Center’s activities.
