Netherlands Market Council (FY2013)
Johannis de Rijke Symposium Support Project
In commemoration of the centenary of the passing away of Johannis de Rijke, a Dutch engineer who was invited to Japan by the Meiji government and left a significant legacy of achievements around the country in such fields as river improvement and port construction, IIST supported a symposium held by the Netherlands Embassy on the theme of "Proposals for Sustainable Infrastructure."
In the keynote speech, Dr. Frans van de Ven of the Delft University of Technology looked backed on Rijke's achievements and emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in the fields of flood control and civil engineering. Furthermore, as a lesson of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Dr. Takashi Onishi, president of the Science Council of Japan, declared the need for an axis shift from disaster prevention to disaster reduction. The symposium was attended by 122 people, more than the seating capacity estimated from advance registration.
