As a follow up to a seminar in Sapporo in August, 2010, another seminar to publicize Hokkaido food products was held in Dalian with the objective of developing Hokkaido’s regional economy, which is centered on food-related businesses.

1.“Hokkaido Food Products Are Reliable, Safe, and Delicious”

At the Food Processing Research Center, which conducts research and development in response to issues in food-product businesses with the aim of developing Hokkaido’s industry, Mr. Tamura is in charge of the applied technology group, which carries out research and technical assistance relating to the quality control, storage, preservation, and functionality of food products. He explained about the reliability and safety of Hokkaido food products, giving specific examples from the production management of agricultural, livestock, and marine products in Hokkaido to the quality control setups of manufacturing companies.

2.“Efforts Relating to the Food Cluster in the Hokkaido Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry”

Regarding the food cluster, which the Hokkaido Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry is promoting in cooperation with related organizations, Mr. Taguchi explained efforts to increase the added value of food, expand overseas sales channels, and other measures that are being implemented through tie-ups and cooperation between food-related businesses and other organizations concerned. The objectives of these efforts are to raise the competitiveness of agricultural and fisheries industries in Hokkaido by establishing a “comprehensive food industry.” He also explained about the efforts being made by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to assist the overseas business development of small and medium-scale enterprises.
