(Kansai region) Aircraft Industry Mission to US (FY2010)


Outline


A mission was dispatched to Seattle in the United States from March 1 to 6, 2010, with the purpose of supporting small and medium-sized companies and others that are considering new entry or full-fledged entry into the aircraft industry. The mission participants had the opportunity to engage in business exchanges with leading aircraft-related makers in the United States, including Boeing Co.

Overview


In line with the Kansai Project to Support Entry into the International Aircraft Market, etc. (joint program), the Kansai Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is developing projects aimed at, among other things, supporting the market entry of small and medium-sized companies and strengthening the Kansai region’s supply chain in the aircraft field. It was for this reason that IIST sponsored this mission together with the Kansai Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry and the JETRO Osaka Head Office.
As part of the joint program to support small and medium-sized companies and others considering new entry or full-fledged entry into the aircraft industry, this project was to provide opportunities for exchange between small and medium-sized companies and leading aircraft-related makers in the United States, including Boeing Co.

(1) Local briefing
-Received lecture on strategy for approaching the US aircraft industry.
-Received briefing lectures on the US aircraft business and the companies to be visited.
(2) Visits to peripheral suppliers
-Tour of plants, presentations by the participating companies, discussions.
(3) Visit to Boeing Co.
-Explanation of Boeing’s business, discussions, tour of the factory, visit to the 787 Dreamliner Gallery.
(4) Business exchange meeting
-A business exchange meeting was held with representatives of Boeing and locally stationed Japanese.


Through the visits to Boeing Co. and its peripheral suppliers, the mission participants were able to deepen their understanding of the private-sector aircraft manufacturing business in the United States and other topics. In particular, they were able to understand the business strategies, capital investment, supply chain, and so on of suppliers in various fields in the United States and obtain information that will be useful for participating companies in considering their own strategies.

・Through the presentations and discussions at the companies visited, the participating companies were able to obtain information that will lead to their next steps and to see the potential for business chances in the future.

・It is hoped that the mission will also lead to the promotion of exchange among the participating companies themselves and the formation of networks with locally stationed Japanese who took part in the exchange.
