Breast Cancer Seminar Support Project (2009)

IIST supported the holding of a seminar relating to breast cancer treatment by Dr. Laura van’t Veer of the Dutch company Agendia, an international authority on breast cancer who developed the MammaPrint breast cancer testing technology. At the seminar, which was titled “MammaPrint: The Current Situation and Future Developments,” Dr. Veer introduced actual examples of the MammaPrint in Europe and the United States and materials giving evidence of its high reliability. The lecture was followed by a lively question-and-answer session between Dr. Veer and the 40 or so medical professionals who attended the seminar.
The MammaPrint judges the risk of cancer recurrence by analyzing the activity of 70 genes using tumor samples removed in surgery. The testing method is already employed at hospitals in Europe and the United States.
The seminar enabled participants to deepen their understanding of the effectiveness of this testing method, and some medical institutions said that they were considering full-fledged use of the technique.
