(Chugoku Region) Regional Automotive Industry Research & Exposition (Germany, France) (FY2009)

Outline

There is a high concentration of automobile-related businesses in the Chugoku region, and they have become a core industry in the region. In order to further strengthen the competitiveness of this core industry, the Chugoku Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, Chugoku New Business Conference, Hiroshima Industrial Promotion Organization, Okayama Prefecture Industrial Promotion Foundation, and others are cooperating to promote the “Chugoku region automotive cluster.” By providing assistance in the form of public funds and other supports, they are also engaged in the development of highly competitive auto parts.
In order to commercialize “made-in-Chugoku” auto parts in overseas markets, the project organized small exhibitions centered on high-function resin parts, etc., business talks, and seminars, as well as discussions with local companies. By publicizing the region’s high level of technology in this way, the project endeavored to communicate the “Chugoku region automotive cluster” brand, open sales routes, and promote international exchange.

Organized by: Institute for International Studies and Training, Hiroshima City
Co-organized by: Chugoku Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, Chugoku New Business Conference, Hiroshima Prefecture
Places: Germany (Hanover, Stuttgart, Munich), France (Mulhouse)

Participants

Twenty-six persons participated in this project from 22 organizations and companies, including an industrial support organization, think tanks, universities, and automobile and parts makers. The number of visitors to the technological exhibitions and business meetings held on four occasions in Germany and France totaled 290 persons.

Overview

In cooperation with the European Business Matching Seminar project conducted by Hiroshima Prefecture, this project involved holding compact exhibitions and business talks as well as discussions with and inspections of local companies in Germany and France, where many European automobile assemblers have their headquarters and research institutes. The events were centered on sample parts and sales promotion materials borrowed from parts makers in the Chugoku region and especially high-function resin parts, for which demand is greater in Europe than in Japan.
A questionnaire given to the eight companies that participated in the technical exhibitions and business talks revealed that a majority thought the project “had good results for future business.” Opinions included “We established initial contacts with their counter parts” and “We were able to understand technical trends relating to technological development from now on.” Of the replies, six companies reported that there had been “business-related results.”
In addition, the technical exhibition and business talks held in the Alsace region of France had a positive impact on the exchange between organizations related to the Chugoku region automotive cluster and companies in the Alsace automotive cluster that started in fiscal 2008. The interest of Alsace companies in Chugoku companies further increased, and immediately after the project a request to visit the Chugoku region was received from companies in Alsace. As a result, representatives of companies in Alsace visited the Chugoku region (Hiroshima area) on October 19 and 26, 2009, visiting companies and attending business meetings.
