Workshop on Case Method Course Design
Outline
In response to many requests from participants in previous projects for the holding of such a workshop, IIST, through Case Center Japan, organized a two-day workshop focusing on course design for educators with experience in conducting classes using the case method of instruction. As in January of this year, Prof. Canto of the AIM was invited as the workshop instructor. Prof. Canto is a veteran who has over 40 years of experience with the case method and has led programs at the AIM to train teachers, improve discussion leadership skills, and promote curriculum design. In this workshop, participants engaged in discussions and group work and considered together how to craft a more effective course.
Organizd by: Case Center Japan (Institute for International Studies and Training (IIST))
Dates: September 11-12, 2009
Participants
Participants: 15 persons (mainly university [graduate school] professors and management consultants)
Overview
Through actual work and discussions, the practical workshop examined how classes where cases are used can be included in courses to enhance learning effectiveness. On the basis of a draft course designed beforehand, the participants, through the two-day workshop, made improvements to create an even more effective course. In addition, separate groups formulated their own courses and presented them to all participants for discussion. The instructor and the participants sought out more effective teaching techniques while sharing their own experiences.
Fifteen people, mainly university teachers and consultants who instructor senior management personnel, participated in the workshop. The participants all had experience of conducting classes using the case method. In a questionnaire on the overall workshop, more than 80% of the participants responded that it had been “somewhat/extremely worthwhile.” This was IIST’s first attempt at a two-day workshop focusing only on the theme of course design, but overall it received a high appraisal from the participants.
