APEC HRD-CBN Project “Strategic Intellectual Asset Management for Emerging Enterprises” Pilot Seminar in Manila [September 1-2, 2009]

APEC HRD-CBN Project “Strategic Intellectual Asset Management for Emerging Enterprises” Pilot Seminar in Manila

Outline

In the past, intellectual property protection had been mostly discussed from the perspective of large companies with human resources and funds protecting their own rights. In this project, the focus was placed on SMEs and emerging enterprises to accurately assess not only their intellectual property but also their various intellectual assets and help them grow by positively utilizing these assets. Targeting corporate executives, managers and government officials, the objective was to develop human resources through this project.
As the outputs of the project, experts in the field of intellectual asset management from the economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) region were asked to develop detailed case studies of the issues facing actual companies and their efforts to tackle them as teaching materials.
As the final process, a pilot seminar was organized to actually use the developed cases as teaching materials. On the basis of the evaluation and response in this seminar, the experts finalized their case studies, which was later published.

Dates: September 1 (Wednesday) - 2 (Thursday), 2009
Organizd by: APEC, Institute for International Studies and Training (IIST)

Overview

Of the experts who had developed case studies, six persons from five economies participated in this seminar, together with the program director and two instructors from the faculty of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). Prior to the seminar, participants, mainly corporate executives and directors, consultants, academics and government officials were solicited in Manila. More than 30 people who are closely involved in this field took part in the seminar. They engaged in lively discussions with the instructors who used the developed case studies as teaching materials.
On the first day, sessions were held on the themes of discovering the intellectual assets hidden inside companies and valuing and protecting them. On the second day, discussions took place on how to utilize intellectual assets that have been discovered for the sustained development of business.

In a questionnaire after the seminar, replies were obtained from 26 participants. Asked about their overall evaluation of the seminar, 46% of the respondents said it had been “excellent,” 50% “very good,” and 4% “good.” In other words, all of the respondents positively evaluated the seminar. Regarding the contents and methods of instruction, case methods were highly rated. These statistics show that it had been a very satisfying seminar for the participants.
As specific comments, many respondents said they would be able to use the information and tools that they had gained at the seminar right away. For example, they commented, “I was able to understand what might be intellectual assets” and “I want to examine the intellectual assets in my company and utilize them.” Meanwhile, one participant who had already been exercising strategic management remarked, “I want to put more focus on intellectual assets from now on.”
