(Hokkaido Region) Mission Dispatch Program: Iceland Technology Development Exchange: Developing new dairy products to revitalize economy and industry in Hokkaido (FY2008)
The goal of this mission was to develop new dairy products suitable to Japanese consumer tastes by utilizing skim milk and whey that are residually produced during the manufacturing process for milk products. The mission was dispatched to Iceland to investigate the possibility of adopting Icelandic dairy product manufacturing technologies in Hokkaido. Participants visited Icelandic companies that produce milk products and relevant organizations where they engaged in an exchange of ideas about manufacturing methods for various dairy products and the prospect of introducing technologies to Hokkaido companies.

An executive employee briefed the visitors on the companyâs background and explained production, sales, and current product consumption and exports. The participants also toured 2 plants that produce different dairy products and listened to a technician talk about manufacturing plant and technical matters related to skyr.
(2)In addition to learning about dairy product manufacturing, participants also paid a visit to agricultural organizations to gather information from a wide range of fields, including agricultural administration, animal husbandry and product research in Iceland.
The mission members were able to directly obtain information from local experts and relevant individuals on a broad range of topics, including dairy product manufacturing and the production/sales/consumer consumption of milk products. The mission proved a success. The examination and research conducted on the possibility of adopting technologies related to skyr resulted in a positive outcome. In November, an informational seminar was scheduled to be held on the plausibility of adopting those technologies.
