The Current Situation and Development Potential of the Labor-intensive Industry in Union of Myanmar:
- Focusing on entering the Japanese Market -(FY2008)

Outline

In Myanmar, labor-intensive industries such as garment and shoemaking have shown remarkable growth since the late 1990s. The development of this industry sector is not only important to the Myanmar society which is facing increasing job losses and under-employment, but also leads towards economic modernization and industrial advancement.
The 2003 economic sanctions (prohibiting importing goods from Myanmar) imposed by the U.S.,however, eliminated its principal export market for those industries. Myanmar is now making efforts to develop the Japanese market as replacement for the U.S. as a major export destination.
This research study aimed to examine the Myanmar garment industry’s potential for development by clarifying its present situations and problems , with a special consideration to identify issues and necessary actions required for entering and penetrating the Japanese market. With those objectives, IIST dispatched three accomplished industry experts to union of Myanmar.

With the cooperation of garment companies from Myanmar, Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong that are expanding business operations, the experts were able to learn a great deal through factory tours and the chance to directly exchange opinions with representatives of those companies actually operating in the local market.
The report detailing the valuable information gained through this research will be useful to clothing companies considering the inroads into Myanmar in the future.
JETRO and the experts sent to Myanmar have reported that several Japanese garment companies have already asked for information about entering the Myanmar market.
