Overview

In FY2006, a total of 12 diplomats from embassies of 11 countries and the EU Delegation to Japan took part in the tour to visit the three prefectures of Miyagi, Iwate and Aomori in the Tohoku region. The participants visited local companies, universities and research & development institutions with the cooperation of the Tohoku Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry. The tour was organized to promote understanding of the business and investment environment in the Tohoku region.
In the Tohoku region, the electric and machinery industries such as electronic parts and devices are concentrated and collaboration and joint research between industry and academia have traditionally flourished. Also, thanks to the education at institutions and universities specialized in the natural resources, highly skilled human resources are available in this region.
The IIST Tohoku Industrial Tour has become one of the good opportunities to show the participants that the Tohoku region has an outstanding investment environment, as industry, academia and government have joined hands to promote regional attractiveness, introducing the new energies, while promoting the formation of clusters for MEMS technologies, and the health, welfare and automobiles industries.
The tour was featured on TV and in newspapers in Miyagi and other prefectures, suggesting that the hosts are highly interested in this project.
