Intensive Business Course for Entrepreneurs in Kazakhstan
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan became an independent nation in 1991. Targeting five years from 2000, the Japanese government planned and implemented various support programs (as âaid with faceâ) for the country in the area of human resources development for a market economy.
IIST, as part of the Human Resource Development Program for Economies in Transition, dispatched a lecturer to an intensive training program held for entrepreneurs in Kazakhstan.
Dates: May 5-June 30, 2003 (eight weeks)

IIST dispatched a lecturer to the Strategic Management Course held on May 16-25.
The course comprised of lectures and case discussions on strategic management of Japanese companies; included workshops on strategic management processes. At the end of the course, trainees formulated strategies for their own companies so that they could apply what they had learned in the course to actual business.

In Kazakhstan, which is achieving rapid economic growth, the program helped young executives and would-be entrepreneurs apply modern market oriented management techniques, deepen their understanding of Japanese strategic management methods and the Japanese values. Main focus included customer-oriented management and concerns for the environment/community. The participants were interested to learn the differences between Japanese management strategies and European and American approaches.
